This is a rare patch that came with different stories within. One version says it was local-made in South East Asia (probably Osan AFB, South Korea), 1980s. Other version says this patch belonged to the 1724th STS or 1730 PRS (Pararescue Squadron). Another version states that belong to the redesignated on 1 Apr 1990, 1723rd Special Tactics Squadron located at Eglin AFB, FL (the combat rescue was only in operation from 1990-1992).

This is a rare challenge coin. Although its marked as April 1997, perhaps its a commemorating group coin.
41st RQS - The 41st has flown search and rescue missions from, 1952–1960, 1962–1987, and since 1989. It also recovered high-altitude atmospheric-sampling devices from, 1962–1987. Beginning in Mar 1989, the squadron has provided prelaunch security and safety surveillance of NASA launches and recovery or medical evacuation for Space Shuttle crewmembers. The 41st Rescue Squadron (41 RQS) is part of the 347th Rescue Group at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. It operates HH-60 Pave Hawk aircraft conducting search and rescue missions.

71st RQS - The 71st Rescue Squadron is part of the 347th Rescue Group at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. It flies HC-130 Hercules aircraft conducting search and rescue missions. The 71 RQS maintains combat-ready status with 11 aircraft as one of only two active duty HC-130P, combat search and rescue (CSAR) squadrons. This squadron rapidly mobilizes, deploys, and executes CSAR operations worldwide in support of national security interests. This mission requires the squadron to conduct low-level operations and air refueling using night vision goggles (NVGs) and airdrop pararescue personnel in support of combat personnel recovery.

These Poker chip is used by the USAF’s Pararescue Teams in Afghanistan. It's about 1.75" in diameter and are made in a nice heavy ceramic. These Coins are used by teams who rescue downed aircrews in combat, not easy item to find…  These came from a Marine who traded with several of the crews during his deployments to Helmand, Afghanistan. Great collector’s piece!

USAF AFSOC / CSAR Transfer Challenge Coin

USAF Air Force Special Operations Command / Combat Search & Rescue Transfer / 1 October 2003 / Challenge Coin

This coin appears to be from when the Air Force made a command transfer of the all the Rescue Wings being in Air Combat Command to Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) in 2003.  Them they changed back from Air Force Special Operations Command to Air Combat Command in 2005. 

In 1993, concurrent with the disestablishment of MAC and the transfer of peacetime and combat search and rescue responsibilities to ACC, the AFRCC relocated from Scott AFB to Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. In October 2003, CSAR was temporarily realigned under AFSOC, resulting in what was thought would be a merger of Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command and Air National Guard HC-130P/N assets with MC-130P Combat Shadow assets and integration of HH-60G Pave Hawk assets with MH-53J/M Pave Low IV assets. However, this merger proved to be short-lived and the HC-130P/N and HH-60G CSAR assets were ultimately transferred back to ACC claimancy in 2005.
