USAF 305th RQS / Pencil Pocket Tab / HH-60 Pavehawk / Operation Red Wings II

USAF Pencil Pocket Tab / HH-60 Pavehawk / Operation Red Wings II
This pencil pocket tab was donated by one of the pilots of the 305th Rescue Squadron involved in the operation Red Wings II (The pilot preffered to not be identified) that rescued Navy SEAL Hospital Corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell who became famous for his book "Lone Survivor". I want to thank so much the confidence of this brave pilot who gave me this pencil tab he whore during the rescue of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and was later involved in removing the remains of Michael Murphy, Danny Dietz & Matt Axelson from the mountains of Afghanistan. A great ítem to this rescue collection.

USAF 67th SOS / Combat Shadow Patch

USAF 67th Special Operations Squadron / Deployed / Combat Shadow Patch
From their base at RAF Mildenhall, the 67th Special Operations Squadron's MC-130P Combat Shadow flies single or multi-ship low-level air refueling missions for special operations helicopters, and infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply of special operations forces by airdrop or airland. The MC-130P primarily flies missions at low-altitude at night to reduce probability of visual acquisition and intercept by airborne threats.
The unit was constituted as the 67th Air Rescue Squadron on 17 October 1952. It was activated on 14 November 1952 at RAF Sculthorpe, England, and discontinued, and inactivated, on 18 March 1960 at Prestwick, Scotland. It was activated again on 10 May 1961, and organized on 18 June 1961 at Prestwick, Scotland. The unit was redesignated 67th Air Recovery Squadron on 1 August 1965, and then as the 67th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron on 8 January 1966.
It was transferred to Morón Air Base, Spain on 1 July 1966. On 15 January 1970, the 67th ARRS transferred to RAF Woodbridge, UK. The unit operated the Lockheed HC-130 fixed wing (also used as rotational support for their Detachment of H-3 helicopters stationed at Keflavik, Iceland) and Sikorsky MH-53 rotary wing aircraft.
On 1 June 1988 the unit was split into two units redesignated the 67th Special Operations Squadron for the HC-130 aircraft and the 21st Special Operations Squadron for the HH-53 rotary wing. On 1 April 1992 they moved to RAF Alconbury, UK. They are still active as the 67th SOS and have flown the HC-130 since 1965 (designated the MC-130P since 1996). It is currently stationed at RAF Mildenhall, UK.

USAF 76th ARS Patch

USAF 76th Air Rescue Squadron / "Samaritans of the Sky" Patch
Activated by MATS on November 14th 1952 at Hickam AFB, HI as a component of the Air Rescue Service's 11th Air Rescue Group equipped with SB-17s, SB-29s, SA-16s, and Sikorsky H-19s. In the mid 1950s it replaced the SB-17s and SB-29s with four SC-54Ds and in 1960 it established SC-54 detachments at Tachikawa AB, Japan (Det.1) and Andersen AFB, Guam (Det.2) plus an SA-16 detachment (Det.3 ) at Naha AB, Okinawa. These replaced the 36th, 79th, and 33rd ARS' respectively. Supported "Crow Flight" upper air sampling flights by U-2s from Australia in 1958 and the Antarctic Operation "Deep Freeze" from 1959 to 1961. By 1965 it was operating HC-54s and HC-97s and on January 8th 1966 when MAC replaced MATS it was re-designated the 76th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron. Circa late 1950's / Super hard to find patch!

USAF Son Tay Raid / Handmade Original Patch

USAF Son Tay Raid / Handmade Original SEA Patch
This is a really hard to find original Son Tay Raider patch designed by PJ Udo Fischer on November 23, 1970. There're thousends of copies out there and thanks to a private collector I could get ahold of this amazing piece of history. Huge patch by the way!

The Son Tay Raid happened 44 years ago. Did you know that the raiders trained for the mission at Hurlburt Field and Duke Field?  (From Left to Right) SFC Donald D. Blackard, SFC Gregory T. McGuire, and SFC Freddie D. Doss dressed in full battle gear before the misión.

USAF 21st SOS / Dust Devils / Rescued By Patch

USAF 21st Special Operations Squadron / Dust Devils / Rescued By Patch
These great rare and original patch was given to a downed airmen rescued by the squadron's CH-3s and CH-53s operating from Nakhon Phanom at SEA. Thai made. Circa 1971.

The 21st SOS traces its lineage to the 21st Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor). In 1970 the squadron began operating the Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion. In September 1970, the 21st Special Operations Squadron flew eleven CH-3E helicopters and one new CH-53 helicopter, which arrived at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base on 8 August. The squadron referred to the large CH-53 as "BUFF," for "big, ugly, fat fellow," and this designation should not be confused with a similar nickname given to B-52 bombers.

A HH-53 helicopter of the 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron as seen from the gunner's position in a helicopter of the 21st Special Operations Squadron in Vietnam, October 1972

The 21st SOS was responsible for hundreds of missions during the Vietnam conflict including personnel recovery and combat rescue. On 13 May 1975, Knife 13 CH-53 BuNo 68-10933 departed from Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base with a crew of five and eighteen USAF Security Police on board to assist in the recovery operation of the SS Mayaguez. The helicopter disappeared from the airfield's departure radar 40 miles (64 km) west of the airfield. All on board were killed.
