Circa 1956/59

The 20th Helicopter Squadron (HS) was activated in 1956 to perform traditional helicopter missions with Piasecki H-21's Workhorses for the Tactical Air Command.  In 1965 under Project "Pony Express", the unit's 14 CH-3C helicopters were transferred to Southeast Asia.  The unit's aircraft call sign and infamous nickname of Pony Express evolved from the project name. 

The 20th's primary mission was considerable in scope to augment combat search rescue forces, perform casualty evacuation,  support communications sites as well as airfield construction and the tactical air control system, transport air liaison officers and engage in counterinsurgency. The squadron's secondary mission was to support MACV. The 20th HS was inactivated in 1960 and their legacy continues until today with the 20th SOS.

-"Growing up the answer about "Choggie", that meant "to where you were going, where something was", etc. was always "yonder or over yonder". Can't think of a better synonym. Its no wonder we got called out by the North for being CIA and had to get rid of all our patches and stuff."- Bob Jones

-"The 38th ARRS might have done some resupply missions, but their mission was to rescue.  They were under a different command (ARRS) where the Choggies were under the 51st ABW which was in PACAF.  The 51st had the CH-3s, C-123, VT-29 and T-33 aircraft assigned to it.  The CH-3s resupplied the radar sights and the ranges and did other missions throughout South Korea.  SAC also had H-3s stationed at Osan to retrieve the drones.  This made three (3) units at Osan that had H-3s. With the root meaning "Go There" it was logical that GI's would also use "Chogie" to mean "Leave" or "Move Quickly"; We took it to mean the answer to "Where are you going?" "Choggie- There"- Keith Perry

This is probably one of the top 5 most difficult/impossible to get patches on my collection. Got it from a retired MSgt member of this legendary unit assigned to 24th STS (1997-2013). This is a super rare patch; so rare they are not even being sold anywhere and this is the first one shown to public knowledge. The image has been protected to avoid reproductions.

The 24th Special Tactics Squadron is one of the Special Tactics units of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The 24th STS provides Special Tactics Teams, including Combat Control Teams, Special Operations Weather Technicians, Pararescuemen and Tactical Air Control Party personnel for JSOC operations. 24th STS members are highly trained to conduct highly classified and clandestine operations such as antiterrorism, counter-insurgency, hostage rescue and special reconnaissance. They are the Air Force's Tier 1 unit, equivalent to the Army's DELTA Force (1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta) and the Navy's DEVGRU (Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Seal Team Six); this three are only three acknowledged Tier 1 SMUs (Special Mission Units). The Blue Team is one of the operational teams of the 24th STS.

Jim Oeser, as part of JSOC's Task Force Ranger during Operation Restore Hope in 1993. Due to their actions during the Battle of Mogadishu multiple decorations were awarded to the airmen. Pararescueman (PJ) TSgt Tim Wilkinson received the Air Force Cross and fellow PJ MSgt Scott Fales received the Silver Star, both for providing lifesaving medical care to wounded soldiers. Combat Controller (CCT) SSgt. Jeffrey W. Bray also received the Silver Star for coordinating helicopter attack runs throughout the night around their positions.

USAF 304th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron Patch / Portland / HH-1H

The 304th trained for combat search and rescue (CSAR) capability from its inception. The 304th was activated in the Reserves on 16 November 1957 at Portland IAP. In 1961, Pararescuemen (PJs) were added to the unit. Since then, the 304th has been training, equipping and employing Combat Rescue Officers, PJs, and support personnel worldwide in support of U.S. national security interests. It performed search, rescue, and medical evacuation missions primarily in the Northwestern United States, including over 100 missions immediately following the Mt. St. Helens volcanic eruption in May 1980. The unit responded to the crash of United Flight 173 in 1978. It maintained helicopter air refueling capability from 1985 to 1997 and deployed to provide SAR coverage worldwide, including Keflavík, Iceland, during and after the Gulf War and to the Persian Gulf region from 1990-2003. Since 2001, personnel from the 304th RQS have deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom

 The 24th Special Tactics Squadron is one of the Special Tactics units of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). It is the U.S. Air Force component to Joint Special Operations Command. It is garrisoned at Pope Field, North Carolina.

The 24th Special Tactics Squadron participated in the United States invasion of Panama in 1989. The 24th STS deployed 11 personnel including the unit commander, Lt. Col. Jim Oeser, as part of JSOC's Task Force Ranger during Operation Restore Hope in 1993. Due to their actions during the Battle of Mogadishu multiple decorations were awarded to the airmen. Pararescueman (PJ) TSgt Tim Wilkinson received the Air Force Cross and fellow PJ MSgt Scott Fales received the Silver Star, both for providing lifesaving medical care to wounded soldiers. 

PJ Ramon Colon-Lopez was also a member of the 24th STS twice. From February 1999 – January 2005 Colon-Lopez was a Special Tactics Element Leader and April 2009 – April 2011 he was the Squadron's Senior Enlisted Advisor. In 2007 Colon-Lopez was one of the first six recipients of the newly created Air Force Combat Action Medal. He was awarded the AFCAM for a 2004 operation in Afghanistan during which he led an Advance Force Operations Team.

From 15 to 20 September 2000 the 24th STS with the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron took part in the annual Canadian military exercise, Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX). This was the first time Special Tactics units took part in SAREX
