USAF ARRS / Rescue Pedro S.E.A / Vietnam War Hand Sewn Patch

USAF ARRS / Rescue Pedro S.E.A (Southeast Asia) / Vietnam War Hand Sewn Patch
This is a Vietnam war in-country hand made patch, extremely rare.

As the Vietnam War escalated, US Air Force HH-43 "HUSKIES" rescue detachments from bases in the continental United States (CONUS) were deployed to air bases in Vietnam and elsewhere in Southeast Asia (SEA) with the new nickname “Pedro.” The HH-43B's combat radius of only 75 miles was increased with added fuel drums strapped in the cabin. The HH-43B was eventually replaced with the armored HH-43F model for use in an Area Crew Recovery (ACR) mission role, the HH-43F also possessing additional internal fuel tanks for extended range. The HH-43F units were staffed with USAF Pararescue personnel as part of the combat recovery team and throughout the war, both HH-43B and HH-43F helicopters flew deep into North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. HH-43s accounted for more lives saved than any other rescue helicopter in the Vietnam War.

The 9th Special Operations Squadron (9 SOS) is part of the 1st Special Operations Wing (1 SOW) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The squadron operates MC-130P Combat Shadow aircraft in support of special operations. The 9th SOS specializes in the use of night vision goggles and close interval formation tactics to refuel large helicopter formations. It is unique among 1 SOW squadrons in that it is physically located at Eglin AFB proper versus nearby Hurlburt Field.

USAF 1550th OMS / Kirtland AB / Subdued Patch

USAF 1550th OMS / Special Operations, Combat Search & Rescue / Kirtland AB / Subdued Patch

1550th Organizational Maintenance Squadron (1150 OMS), Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.

"Drawing upon the experience of combat search and rescue in Southeast Asia, the Air Mobility Command activated the 1550th Aircrew Training and Test Wing (1550 ATTW) at Hill AFB, Utah, on 1 April 1971 to serve as a test center and school house for rescue aircrews and technology. The unit moved to Kirtland AFB on 20 February 1976, the 1550 ATTW continued training helicopter and fixed-wing aircrews in special operations, combat search and rescue, and airlift training conducted with MC-130H, MC-130P, HC-130P, C-12, TH-53A, MH-53J, HH-60G, UH-1N and UH-1H.

Special operations and combat rescue graduates have served with distinction in every combat situation since training was established. The latest were Just Cause, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Desert Calm, Southern Watch, Provide Comfort, and Restore Hope. The Air Force redesignated the unit as the 1550th Combat Crew Training Wing (1550 CCTW) on 15 May 1984 and then inactivated it on 1 October 1991, transferring the training mission to the 542d Crew Training Wing (542 CTW). The 542d inactivated in turn on 1 April 1994, transferring the mission to the 58th, now redesignated as a Special Operations Wing (SOW).

The 1550 OMS performed both in-shop and flight line maintenance for special operations, combat search and rescue, and airlift training conducted with the MC-130H, MC-130P, HC-130P, C-12, TH-53A, MH-53J, HH-60G, UH-1N and UH-1H. The 1550 OMS performed many diverse duties—everything from mounting tires to repairing the most advanced sensor systems."
