USAF KSC / NASA / Astronaut Rescue Patch

USAF Kennedy Space Center / NASA / Astronaut Rescue Patch
Circa 2006

NASA recently released news that its Commercial Crew Program is set to perform human spaceflight launches to the International Space Station from U.S. soil in the near future. NASA's critical obligation is to ensure crew safety and success for NASA missions and the commercial providers are responsible for safe operations of commercial crew transportation systems.

Serving as guardians of the astronauts is nothing new for Reserve Airmen from different USAF rescue squadrons, during NASA's previous 50-years of launching humans into space the GA (Guardian Angel) triad of Pararescuemen, Combat Rescue Officers and search, evasion, escape, evasion (SERE) specialists, have waited in the wings to respond in case of a contingency during any stage of human space launches until their human spaceflight program ended in July 2011.

One of the first requirements for the program included provisions to equip spacecraft with launch escape systems to survive launch and ascent emergencies. From there, each design phase has included ever-more-exacting consideration of safety factors in areas ranging from subsystems to integrated systems to mission operations.

Members of the 308th Rescue Squadron “Guardian Angels” get ready to sail home after descending into the Atlantic Ocean using rescue equipment that was also airdropped from a C-17 Globmaster III during a NASA astronaut recovery exercise Jan. 14 near Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Air Force Reserve pararescuemen, combat rescue officers and survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialists trained in their specialty as part of a NASA Commercial Crew Program and Air Force 45th Operations Group Detachment 3 test of capability to recover astronauts quickly and safely in the event of they would need to abort their spacecraft. Det. 3, the Department of Defense's Human Space Flight Support Office, is the only full-time staff that coordinates and trains personnel to support human spaceflight contingencies. Det. 3 supports all NASA human spaceflight missions, including Soyuz, Commercial Crew, and Orion, and consists of Air Force and Navy military and civilian personnel from a wide variety of specialties.

USAF 102nd RQS / Last Legacy / Anniversary / Morale Patch

USAF 102nd Rescue Squadron / Last Legacy / 101th Anniversary / TDY / Morale Patch
This amazing and VERY rare patch was originally designed by SSgt. J. Cerezo in 2018 and it represents the 101 years of legacy of the squadron and also commemorate the last deployment with the HC-130P/N's since the squadron is replacing these units with the new HC-130J's this year. Only 250 where made. The piece has been kindly donated by TSgt. B. Wood for the collection.
-"I can't claim for the centerpiece as it was a design on a buddy's "King" shirt from the chive during our most recent deployment. After some collaboration with the other aviators and the manufacturer, the design and caption were finalized to commemorate our last legacy deployment. King Kong is part of the 102nd heritage being that in theory, King Kong was originally swatting at the 102nd aircraft in the original movie"-. SSgt. J. Cerezo.

USAF 18th Wing / Green Feet / PJ / Patch Set

USAF 18th Wing / Green Feet / Jolly Green / Pararescue / Patch Set

As the host unit at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, the mission of the 18th Wing is to deliver unmatched combat airpower and a forward-staging base to provide sovereign options that promote peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, ensure the common defense of our allies, and enhance the United States' unparalleled global engagement capability. As the largest combat wing in the Air Force, operating out of the largest Air Force installation in the Pacific, the 18th Wing is ideally suited to accomplish these critical objectives.

The Wing operates within the framework of the US-Japan security alliance which was formally established in 1960 with the signing of a Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. The treaty allows U.S. forces to use facilities and areas in Japan in order to promote Japanese and American mutual interests, contribute to the defense of Japan and preserve regional peace and security. The 18th Wing supports these objectives by providing a responsive staging and operational air base with integrated, deployable, forward-based airpower. Located in a critical region, 18th Wing Airmen and aircraft play a vital geostrategic role in deterring potential threats and maintaining peace and stability. The base's central location also enables the Wing to serve as a staging base for humanitarian and disaster relief efforts throughout the western Pacific, as it did in the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami that devastated portions of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

The 18th Wing's current fleet of aircraft represents a broad spectrum of combat capability F-15C/D air-to-air fighters, KC-135 air refueling tankers, E-3 AWACS airborne command and control aircraft, and HH-60 Pave Hawk combat search and rescue helicopters. This robust fleet of aircraft allows the Wing to deter potential threats in the region and respond quickly to any contingency.

WANTED!: USAF ACC/A3J / Personnel Recovery Division Patch

WANTED!: USAF Air Combat Command/A3J / Personnel Recovery Division / OCP Patch

In December 2010, Air Combat Command's Personnel Recovery Division designated A3J and headquartered at Langley Air Force Base, Va., officially stood up and was created to ensure that the Air Force is prepared for the challenge of rescuing Airmen from hostile deployed environments. The division is charged with carrying out ACC's lead command responsibility of organizing, training and equipping dedicated Air Force rescue forces, commanders and staff members, and all service members at risk of isolation.

"Part of our job entails producing well-trained rescue forces to execute recovery operations, but there's another important piece," said Lt. Col. Todd Worms, the A3J chief. "Our focus is to ensure that anyone who is at risk of isolation is properly trained and prepared to handle those challenges, so that includes approximately 334,000 active-duty Airmen plus any Air Force civilians or contractors that deploy to the combat zone."

A3J provides a single focal point to work all personnel recovery issues revolving around rescue forces or training.

"My concern is with the Airman that is tasked with a 365-day joint expeditionary tasking to go work on convoys in Afghanistan," Colonel Worms said. "How do we make sure that Airman gets all the training he needs and is fully prepared when he deploys for potential isolation? How do we ensure his commander, prior to the Airman deploying, is knowledgeable of their responsibilities to make sure the Airman receives all their training? That's where this division will affect the Airmen the most. It will improve the knowledge of the command structure and also the training that Airmen receive before they deploy."

In August 2009, the secretary of Defense approved personnel recovery as an Air Force service core function. That September, the chief of staff of the Air Force signed the operational concept for personnel recovery in the Air Force.

"When we looked around to see who was going to execute the responsibility following the two designations, there really wasn't anyone there," Colonel Worms said. "Until March 2009, an ACC Personnel Recovery division existed only in a matrixed format. It consisted of four people, and shared other personnel who were spread throughout multiple divisions.

"We had to borrow personnel, so to speak," Colonel Worms said. "While this is doable for some functions, it wasn't a proper structure for a division responsible for an entire service core function that needs to be rapidly responsive and has a wide breadth of touch -- not really the organizational construct we need."

The development of the new division will fill in a gap by completing a chain between Headquarters Air Force, the major commands, the units and individual members at the wings, the colonel said.

"My main focus will be on training and equipping the Airmen to survive in an isolated environment," Colonel Worms said. "As for our rescue forces, we are very good right now at organizing and equipping our rescue team to go pick personnel up. The current, extreme operations tempo is causing training challenges due to a shortage of equipment and personnel, but we're working with our total force partners to ensure we continue to provide trained, combat-ready crews to the current fight."

"We have a unique opportunity to build this division correctly to fully execute the broad scope of duties that come underneath the ACC personnel recovery responsibility," Colonel Worms added. "I am confident that we will be able to continue to produce exceptional rescue forces and also expand our operational construct to include training every person at risk of isolation."

Between 2001 and 2009, the Air Force had two percent of all helicopters deployed in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility but is credited with 45 percent of the saves.

"Our advanced equipment and high-end training provide a capability that is in very high demand with the warfighting commanders, and the accomplishments of our rescue forces over the last decade are legendary," Colonel Worms said. "Air Force rescue forces saved over 4,300 lives in New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina response and have saved the lives of over 2,500 U.S., coalition and local national personnel in CENTCOM over the last 2 years."
