The History of the Little Sprout Patch

This is a chronological History of the patches used by crews that were Sprout patches. The only two units to use the Sprout have been the 33rd ARRS/RQS & the 56th RQS.

33rd Aerospace Rescue & Recovery Squadron Detachment 13
This is the first patch that had the design of the sprout instead of the Jolly Green Giant. It was used by Det 13 of the 33rd ARRS, the main Squadron based at Kadena AB Japan & the Det was at Osan AB, South Korea. The sprout was used as the Squadron thought it was the baby of the main Squadron, as it had minimal crew & only a few HH-3's, so it seemed logical to use the Sprout design. Made for the unit in the 1970s.

33rd Rescue Squadron
Move on a decade or two & again the Sprout was used again. The patch was designed by the 33rd RQS & the story goes this was made for the children of the crews assigned to the 33rd RQS flying HH-60G's at Kadena AB.

56th Rescue Squadron
Roll on yet another couple of decades & moved halfway around the world, & you find the 56th RQS using the design, although it's not sure why the Sprout design was used. This was the first patch that was made by crews assigned to the 56th HMU at RAF Lakenheath, England for HH-60G helicopter 89-26212 & was made in January 2018. The patch was made on the on-base Hobby Shop at RAF Lakenheath & was reportedly made in very low numbers, as low as single figures.

56th Rescue Squadron
The second batch that was made all were made in February 2018, again by the 56th HMU, & again on the on-base Hobby Shop. These were made for the crews of HH-60G 89-26205, 89-26206, 89-26208 & 89-26212. The design a month later had changed, the numbers of the aircraft being closer together & all of them having Jolly Green embroidered on them. The 56th RQS actually had another HH-60G, this being 91-26353, however, if a patch was made I've never seen one, so can't confirm or deny if one has been made. 353 was the first HH-60G's to move to Aviano, this taking place in mid-April 2018, with the rest of the helicopters moving in May 2018.

56th Rescue Squadron
Roll on to the Summer of 2018 & these final two were made, & again were made by the 56th HMU, again on the on-base Hobby Shop, & again the design had been changed, this time incorporating a head-on white silhouette of an HH-60G.

55th Helicopter Maintenance Unit
This patch wins the most colorful sprout patch and was 1 of 200 made by the 55th HMU crew at Davis-Monthan AFB during 2018.

56th Rescue Squadron
This is the latest sprout patch to be made, this again from the 56th RQS, for HH-60G 89-26205. It was made by TJ embroidery when the Squadron left Lakenheath for Aviano.

NOTE: Thanks for this incredible and detailed article made by my friend and fellow JGG expert collector AMR from The Jolly Green Giant Collection.

USAFE Patch

US Air Forces in Europe Patch
Kindly donated by Samuel K. and Forrest O. from the 56th HMU from Aviano, AB - Italy.

USAFE is a major air force command and also EUCOM’s primary air component, planning and executing air and space operations in Europe and Asia to achieve NATO and U.S. objectives based on the EUCOM commander’s taskings. USAFE is a major air force command and also EUCOM’s primary air component, planning and executing air and space operations in Europe and Asia to achieve NATO and U.S. objectives based on the EUCOM commander’s taskings.

Headquartered at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), is a major air force command and also EUCOM’s primary air component, planning and executing air and space operations in Europe and Asia to achieve NATO and U.S. objectives based on the EUCOM commander’s taskings.

During most of the Cold War, USAFE was a fight-in-place force postured for a large-scale conflict. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has transitioned to an air expeditionary force with mobile, deployable people and resources that can simultaneously operate in multiple locations, able to conduct warfighting, personnel recovery, humanitarian and peacekeeping operations and other non-traditional contingencies. In peacetime, USAFE trains and equips NATO-affiliated Air Force units, also maintaining combat-ready units based from the United Kingdom to Turkey, and assets ready to perform close air support, air interdiction, air defense, in-flight refueling, long-range transport and maritime operation support. Despite a 67 percent drawdown of its main operating bases after the Cold War, USAFE remains a highly responsive and capable combat force.

More than 39,000 active-duty, reserve, Air National Guard and civilian employees are assigned to USAFE, and equipment assets include more than 200 fighter, attack, rotary wing, tanker, and transport aircraft and a full complement of conventional weapons.

USAFE consists of two numbered air forces, seven main operating bases and 114 geographically separated locations. The USAFE primary operating bases are: Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom; Royal Air Force Mildenhall, United Kingdom; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; Aviano Air Base, Italy; Lajes Air Base, the Azores; and Incirlik Air Base, Turkey.

For day-to-day and contingency operations, these bases report to Ramstein's Third Air Force, which supports EUCOM. It is USAFE's component numbered Air Force that maintains continuous theater-wide situational awareness.

The 56th RQS integrates with the Guardian Angels weapon system and other special forces to support insertion, extraction and recovery of both U.S. and allied combatants.

The 31st FW has the 57th Rescue Squadron that leads, organizes, trains and equips Guardian Angel forces and combat support teams to conduct day and night personnel recovery operations in combat, as well as to provide combatant commanders with options to report, locate, recover and reintegrate isolated personnel. USAF 38th ARRS / Jolly Green Patch

Presumably, this patch belongs to the Detachment 9 stationed in  Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Navy Base, Thailand on 16 February 1970. Made in Thailand. Circa 1968/73'

The 38th Air Rescue Squadron was activated on 30 June 1965 at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam, and organized the next day to control detachments operating from bases in Vietnam and Thailand. Detachment 9 was relocated from Pleiku AB to Nakhon Phanom RTAFB on 16 February 1970.

William H. Pitsenbarger was assigned to Detachment 6, 38th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron at Bien Hoa Air Base near Saigon. Flying on almost 300 rescue missions in Vietnam, Bill Pitsenbarger risked his life almost daily during the war rescuing downed soldiers and fliers. On April 11, 1966, the 21-year-old, known as "Pits" to his friends, was killed while defending some of his wounded comrades. For his bravery and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the nation's highest military decorations, the Medal of Honor and the Air Force Cross, becoming the first enlisted airman to receive the medals posthumously.

USAF Jolly Green / CSAR CTF PVC Patch

Jolly Green / Combat Search & Rescue / Combined Test Force / PVC Patch
Incredibly detailed patch given for the collection by a former SERE Specialist (Re) C. Cunningham who served as part of the CTF training and evaluation group. The reason the patch has orange on it is because of the test squadron link. Most of the test equipment in the HH-60's is set up on orange racks, so the crew knows what the test equipment is, and what isn't. Personally, I think this PVC patch is one of the best ever made, with it having superb detail. Made in the USA. Circa 2017

Lineage. Constituted as HH-60G Combined Test Force Flight on 21 Aug 2002.
Activated on 1 Oct 2002. Redesignated as the 88th Test and Evaluation Squadron on 30 Dec 2009.

Assignments. 53 Test and Evaluation Group, 1 Oct 2002; 18 Flight Test Squadron, 1 Oct 2003; 53 Test and Evaluation Group, 3 Apr 2006-.

Stations. Nellis AFB, NV, 1 Oct 2002-present.

USAF CSAR School / GA Patch

USAF Combat Search & Rescue School / Guardian Angel Patch
This patch came from a former SERE Specialist (Re) C. Cunningham. The Combat Rescue School was the precursor to the H-60 Weapons School. A very different variation of the Guardian Angel graphic and interesting certainly. Made in USA, Circa 1998.

USAF CSAR / H-60 CTF Patch Set

USAF Combat Search & Rescue / H-60 Combined Test Force Patch Set
This set came from a former SERE Specialist (Re) C. Cunningham who's active duty was working on CSAR and PR programs and training. Very rare patch set. Circa 2011/16'

When the CTF program has begun the HH-60 CTF's big programs were the external gun mount, new radio communications and conducting test operations at night. That's why you can see the Hawk is wearing night vision goggles and holding a radio in one talon and the Minigun in the other. The CTF started as the H-60 Division of the 422th TES and then became the HH-60 CTFF or Combined Test Force Flight around 2003 under AFSOC, H-60 CTF was established around 2007.
