WANTED!: USAF 54th Air Rescue Squadron Patch

Activated by MATS in the early 1950s at Goose Bay, Labrador and equipped with SB-17Gs and SB-29s as a component of the Air Rescue Service. Re-equipped with SC-54Ds and SA-16s during the mid 1950s and operated these until deactivated in 1966 following the USAF's withdrawal from Goose Bay.

I happen to have one of the crests above' Wings of Mercy' also one of the crests on the right 'Air Rescue Service - That others may live'.They were given to me in 1963 at Goose Bay, Labrador by a USAF airman who was a member of the 54th Air Rescue Squadron. I have been unsuccessful in locating him over the the years.

    2. I was on the goose 65-67 54th ARS was there I worked in BEMO I knew quite a few people on the base because of my position there. I used to hang out with some of the guys from the 54th they were great guys real Patriots used to tip a few beers at the airman's club with them I got out March 67 as an A1c

  3. The 54th ARRS (Air Rescue & Recovery Squadron) patch was not what is shown; it was a "That Others may Live" patch. The 54th ARRS was NOT deactivated in 1966. It was reassigned to Pease AFB, NH. I know because I was wi8th the unit in Goose bay and at Pease.

    1. I too was at Pease 54th ARRS 1967- 1968. Would love to have a patch as the only one I kept is damaged.

      AGE shop..

    ya this patch was after 62, because the Angel "That Others May Live" patch was the one used for the Det.2/48th and later 54th ARS at Goose. Stationed there from 61/early 63

    1. I was there with 54th Air Rescue from Oct 1958 till April 1960 and that was the Patch Painted on the Hanger number 8. I just gone through my picture and that was what was on the Hanger. I was A Flight Mechanic there. Wings of Mercy Willabar@aol.com

  5. I was with the 54th from Feb 72 to March 73, when the unit was slated for deactivation. We were scattered to the four winds of C-130 operations. Would love to have old squadron patch.

    I was in the 54th from April 1959 till July 1960 approximately. I was a Flight Mechanic on the SC54 Aircraft. The Patch was "That Others May Live". Have no memory of "Wings of Mercy". Did a TDY to Antigua for a Space shot and another to Grand Forks AFB ND for rescue coverage for a High Altitude Aircraft going "somewhere north". Also spent two weeks at Edmonton AB in Canada for a Engine change.

  7. was with the 54th Air Rescue Squardron from March 1957 to March 1958. Flew as an Airborne Radio Operator on the SA-16 "Albatross" and later on the SC-54's

    "That Others May Live" was the motto during my stay at Goose Bay.

    1. I was a radio operator with the 54th ARS 1955-56. Then onto the 68th air refueling at lake Charles AFB. My name is John Gould. Had a friend operator last name Star. Would like to meet others from both outfits. homebrewer7@gmail.com . The 54th was my favorite of all. Back in 1969, I met and old timer that was in the 54th a year after I left the goose. He lived in Hawaii.

  8. I joined the 54th ARRS in Feb 1970 when I returned from Vietnam. Arrived as an Aircraft Commander and left as it was shutting down as the Squadron Commander in 1974. Have kept up with several of the pilots from the old squadron. Enjoyed the tour at Pease, retired at Altus AFB in OK. Have been back in Texas since 1975. Might be able to find some 54th things if anyone is keeping records. charley@suddenlink.net

    1. My FIRST Assignment, after Tech School was the 54th ARRS, Pease AFB, N.H. @1971 as a Puny Little One Striper Crew Chief. We had 4 C-130s H-N-P Models? The Patch WAS "So that Others May Live" our Commander was a Colonel Donahue - Donaho? Bronze Star on His Office Wall. I only saw Him ONCE, that one time he advised me and another One Striper that due to our Exemplary Performance? HE was waiving our Time in Grade, Awarding us a "5" Skill Level and another Stripe, aaand we had 30 days to Pack our bags and Prepare to Ship Out - PCS to S.E. Asia. I'm Going to Die in Vietnam! Luckily we ended up in C.C.K. - Chin Chuan Kang A.B. Taiwan. Does anyone know if he was a Pilot on the Son Tay Raid? That was a Rumor in the Squadron at the time. I was at Pease, almost exactly One Year.

  10. served in the 54th during1964 and 65 in labrador. alot of great memories. great tdy's. went on to 605th acs in panama. i still have my patch.

  11. I guess I am an old timer as I was with the 54th in 1952/53 When I first got to Goose Bay we still had a b17 but it was replaced with the SA16. We also had a H5h and c47. Erich Kuhnel elk386@msn.com

  13. I was a navigator in the 54th at Goose Bay from 8/61 to 11/62. As I recall, the "Wings of Mercy" patch was developed during that time. The CO was Lt. Col. Parker B. Mudge (Who could forget that name?). We took a "training" flight to the North Pole and dropped a canister with our flight order inside before we turned around.
    I often flew with Capt. T. A. "Al" Hickey, including trips to Alaska (U-2 support) and Mexico City (presidential support) in C-54s. It was a search for Al that brought me to this web page.
    I left my family (loving wife and three kids under 4) in Florida, spent 15 months at Goose and had to wait for the Cuban Missile Crisis to cool down before going home. The marriage survived for 52 years with lots of happy memories, including those from my tour in "Goose Rescue."

      Where you ar Rosevelt Roads for the Scott Carpenter rescue? I'm trying to find info on the rescue to get something in the Airforce museum. Nothing there.
