USAF Cope Thunder Exercise / Alaska Patch

USAF Cope Thunder Exercise / Alaska Patch
Circa 1996/99'.
Exercise Cope Thunder was a Pacific Air Forces-sponsored exercise initiated at Clark Air Base, The Philippines, in 1976. Conceived by Brigadier General Richard G. Head, the exercise was devised as a way to give aircrews from across Asia their first taste of warfare in a realistic training environment. The exercise quickly grew into PACAF’s "premier simulated combat airpower employment exercise."

Prior to Operation Desert Storm, less than one-fifth of the U.S. Air Force’s primary fighter pilots had seen combat. While the percentage of combat-experienced pilots has increased in recent years, with the end of the Vietnam War a high percentage of pilots had not experienced combat. Analysis indicates most combat losses occurred during an aircrew’s first eight to 10 missions. Therefore, the goal of COPE THUNDER, and later RED FLAG-Alaska, was to provide each aircrew with these first vital missions, increasing their chances of survival in combat environments.

Each COPE THUNDER exercise was a multi-service, multi-platform coordinated, combat operations exercise and correspond to the designed operational capability of participating units. In other words, exercises involved several units whose military mission may differ significantly from that of other participating units. COPE THUNDER planners took those factors into consideration when designing exercises so participants received the maximum training possible without being placed at an unfair advantage during simulated combat scenarios.

It was not uncommon during COPE THUNDER exercises to see Philippine Air Force F-5s, Royal Australian Air Force F-18 Hornets, U.S. Navy A-4s, Royal New Zealand Air Force A-4s, Republic of Singapore Air Force Hawker Hunters, stacked up on taxiways awaiting their turn to launch along with USAF F-15 Eagles, and F-16 Fighting Falcons from bases in Pacific Air Forces, and Alaskan Air Command.

COPE THUNDER was moved to Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, from Clark Air Base, Philippines, in 1992 after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo on June 15, 1991, that forced the closure of Clark Air Base in 1992. The exercise started then in Alaska where continues today redesignated as RED FLAG Alaska.

When the decision was made to relocate COPE THUNDER, Air Force officials viewed Eielson as the most logical choice. That decision was based on the close proximity of large areas of military training airspace and the fact that Eielson's 5055th Range Squadron to become the 353d Combat Training Squadron in 1993, already maintained and operated three major military air-to-ground training ranges nearby.

Many different rescue teams participated since every year in the exercise, including the 33rd Rescue Squadron (HH-60G) and 31st Rescue Squadron (Pararescue), and the 353rd Special Operations Group’s 320th STS (Combat Control and Pararescue) among others.

USAF 321st STS / Brown Team / Green Feet - Lightning Bolt Patch

USAF 321st Special Tactics Squadron / Brown Team / Green Feet - Lightning Bolt Patch
A VERY rare first version of this original patch, featuring the green feet and green lightning bolt.

321st Special Tactics Squadron (321st STS) provides a fast reaction, rapidly-deployable force capable of establishing and providing positive control of the air-to-ground interface during special operations or conventional missions. Unit combat controllers and pararescuemen conduct the reconnaissance, surveillance, assessment and establishment of assault zone sites and provide air traffic control and long-range secure command and control communications. Additionally, the unit provides combat trauma medical care, personnel recovery, and terminal attack control of munitions delivered by fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. The squadron also has special operations weathermen assigned to provide weather support for other special operations forces.

321st STS training

It is believed that the 321st Special Tactics Squadron is made up of three teams with differing roles:

Silver Steam: provides the PJs and CROs that fly with the 56th RQS
Brown Team: provides most combat controllers, air traffic controllers, etc.
Blue Team: conduct waterborne ops.
All probable crossover to some extent.

USAF 943rd RQG / 943rd MSF Patch Set

USAF 943rd Rescue Group / 943rd Mission Support Flight - Combat Mission Support "Carrying the Mission" / OCP Patch Set

In addition to elite Pararescuemen and flight crews, the 943rd Rescue Group also includes a dedicated support staff that is critical to the group's mission. "Those guys get the limelight which they should because they do a great mission and it's very, very dangerous," said Lt. Col. Sherard Dorroh, the 943rd Rescue Group mission support flight commander. "We make sure behind the scenes is taken care of so they're able to go out there and do that and we love it, we have no problem being behind the scenes." Dorroh says the behind the scenes component includes mainly logistics and family support. They take care of things like promotions, financial issues and deployment schedules so those performing the mission aren't distracted. "When you're out there doing those things, you have to be laser focused at any point in time," said Dorroh. "You never know what's going to happen. These guys get shot at every day, they're hanging off of cliffs trying to take care of people that they're trying to rescue so you don't want any distractions."

Another important aspect of the 943rd Rescue Group is maintenance, both of equipment and the aircraft. Senior Airman Scott Dinsdale packs parachutes for the Pararescuemen and says they have to be very detail oriented. "I mean you're dealing with somebody's life so one little mistake, you don't want to think about that," said Dinsdale.

When it comes to maintaining the 943rd Rescue Group's aircraft, Staff Sgt. Jose Fuentes says they do routine maintenance on the HH-60 Pavehawk every day and about every 600 flight hours, they take the entire helicopter apart.

WANTED!: USAF 66th RQS / Nellis AFB / HH-60G / Jolly Green Giant Patch

WANTED!: USAF 66th Rescue Squadron / Nellis AFB / HH-60G / Jolly Green Giant Patch
This PVC patch was made for one of the senior officers on the 66th RQS and is the best looking Jolly Green Giant patch I've seen. It was made when a group of ladies from the 66th RQS got together.

So an informal explanation: for the first time in a lot of our careers, we suddenly found that we were working with a lot of women. Not just aircrew: we had ladies in SARM, AFE, Intel, and maintenance. Some of us got together and figured it was time to add to the Jolly tribe. Thus, the she-jolly patch. We actually named her Jill (to the survivor’s Jack), and we intended her to honor women across the board. Whether they are a spouse, turning wrenches, or shaking the sticks this patch was for them. Thanks AMR from the Jolly Green Giant Collection for the info. about this patch.

USAF 21st SOS / Jolly Green / Ace Patch

USAF 21st Special Operations Squadron / Jolly Green / Ace Patch
In May 1988 the 67th ARRS split in two and the helicopters went to the 21st SOS during the unit’s assignment to the RAF Alconbury UK base. They thought they were going to be a Jolly Green Giant unit so they had the jolly patch made. They were then told they weren't, so the patch lasted only a week and this was the replacement. It dates easily as close to June 1988. Apparently, it was also used for a week before being replaced with the Dust Devil patch they used since Vietnam. There were 4 versions made (a lot if you ask me, especially if they only used it for a week!) most differ in size.  The 21st Special Operations Squadron was reactivated in the UK in 1992, after being deactivated following the Vietnam war. This patch came from the collection of Bob Bragg (UK) back in the 1990s and most of the info. came from my friend and fellow collector AMR from the Jolly Green Giant Collection.

USAF 2018 Pacific Thunder Exercise / TOML Patch

USAF 2018 Pacific Thunder Exercise / That Others May Live / Guardian Angel / E-3, HH-60G, A-10 Patch
Designed and produced by Kerry B. for operators participating in the 2018 Pacific Thunder joint exercise with South Korean Air Force. Note: The Guardian Angel glows in the dark!

US Air Force and South Korean Air Force personnel launched the largest Pacific Thunder Search and Rescue exercise ever on February 2018. More than 20 USAF squadrons and nine South Korean wings are involved in Pacific Thunder 18-1, which was led by the 25th Fighter Squadron at Osan AB, South Korea and the 33rd and 31st Rescue Squadrons at Kadena AB, Japan. “Combat search and rescue is one of the most important mission sets we have in the A-10 community because we are really the only fixed wing asset in the Air Force who trains to the CSAR mission,” said Capt. Travis Vayda, exercise coordinator for the 25th FS, in a press release. “We are the close muscle, so essentially we are the bodyguards of the person on the ground and the helicopters that are rescuing them.” Pacific Thunder was first held in 2009 as a discrete exercise between the 25th FS and the 33rd RQS, but it has since grown into a Pacific Air Forces-level event.
